What’s next for the MIOB network in 2025?

After the Trieste Film Festival (Italy) and Crossing Europe (Austria), three more MIOB network festivals are set to celebrate European cinema across the continent.

Here’s a look at the upcoming MIOB festivals and events:

FilmFestival Cottbus (Germany) - November 4-9, 2025

The FilmFestival Cottbus (FFC), founded in 1991, targets both regular audiences and industry experts, focussing on Central and Eastern European cinema. With an annual attendance of approx. 17,000 visitors and 500 accredited industry participants, this five-day event is one of the most notable cultural events in the Berlin Brandenburg metropolitan area.

It showcases around 120 films from more than 40 co-production countries, along with a number of workshops, masterclasses, film education activities and panel discussions. It features three competition categories for feature, short and youth films, as well as special sections that change annually to showcase selected film countries and delve into political and historical topics.

The MIOB in Shorts Award - November 4-9, 2025 (FilmFestival Cottbus)

The MIOB in Shorts Award is part of the first action programme of MIOB (Moving Images – Open Borders), active since 2020. It celebrates outstanding European short films and stands out for its unique approach: the winner is chosen by the audience. Each MIOB festival member nominates two European short films, which are then made available online for free, allowing audiences across Europe to watch and vote for their favorite. The winner will be announced at the 35th FilmFestival Cottbus, following the final round of audience voting.

Having started out in 2003, it soon became one of the most important film festivals in the Baltic region. The aim of EFF Scanorama is to stimulate demand for non-commercial forms of cinema and act as a platform of inquiry into the specific way film as a form of art articulates the cultural and socio-political reality, thus nurturing the interpretative and analytical abilities of film audiences.
